We recently celebrated Father’s day and no doubt many Dads would have received tools and other equipment to assist them with their favourite pastime – doing a bit of DIY. No doubt some D.I.Y enthusiasts are pretty good at carrying out the average fixit job too, but certain things are best left to professionals unless you have the professional skills to carry them out. One of these is the installation of Frameless Glass shower doors!
Sleek, chic and magnificent to look at Frameless Glass shower doors are a great feature in any bathroom and it’s not surprising that whoever is decorating the home has chosen to fit these. Frameless showers offer several advantages over framed showers — they require less installation time and materials, no need for refinishing or paint once installed, and they’re easier to repair and maintain.
When it comes to their installation, however, it takes a professional to do it. Believe us, we are not just trying to put you off, there are a few very good reasons why installing frameless glass shower doors is not for DIY enthusiasts – and here are a few of them…
Frameless Glass shower doors need to fit perfectly if they are to be effective and look as good as they should. A professional will measure your shower entrance leaving a few centimetres of space in between the glass panels so it can swing, plus space for the floor.
The size of the glass panels you need is always specific to your shower and if these measurements are not properly taken you risk a shower door that has wide gaps that can’t open properly. Shower door installation experts get these measurements right every time!
Secondly, take it from us, the experts are not trained in such things for nothing. These doors are difficult to install, even for professionals. With regular shower doors, the work involves getting the frames in the right place, screwing them into the wall, and then sliding the door itself in. Not so easy with frameless Glass shower doors as they have no frame to guide you when installing the hardware.
You need to leave the right gaps for the bottom of the panels and find the right hardware that’s strong enough to handle the door without slipping, then screw that hardware into the glass panel very carefully to ensure it doesn’t break!
Talking of breaking, one of the greatest risks with installing these doors is that during installation they can break far easier than when installing standard doors that are set in frames before they are attached to the main shower door frame. This is because the glass is usually much heavier than standard shower doors – and it is not inexpensive so you really don’t want to take any risks with it!
To summarise, Frameless glass shower doors are heavy, not inexpensive, and need to be custom-made to specific measurements. They are difficult to install and worst of all could break if you aren’t trained to do their installation correctly. So, that’s why installing frameless glass shower doors is not for DIY enthusiasts!
